Blunt Introductions

If you’ve ever jumped off a cliff into water, you know you can’t go halfway. You have to set aside your doubts and jump fully to make sure you land safely. And if you say you aren’t afraid to jump, you’d better prove it, or your friends won’t believe you.

The Book of James was written by Jesus’s biological half-brother. Growing up with a brother who claimed to be the Son of God wasn’t easy. James and his brothers didn’t believe Him at first (Mark 3:21). They even mocked Him (John 7:1-5) and had become distant by the time of His crucifixion, which is why Jesus entrusted His mother to John instead of to them (John 19:25-27).

But everything changed after the resurrection. Jesus appeared to James personally, and that encounter transformed him (1 Corinthians 15:5-7). About ten years later, James had become a leader in the Jerusalem church (Acts 15:13), known for his discipline, active faith, and deep prayer.

James wrote his letter to encourage Christians during persecution under Saul of Tarsus. Unlike Paul’s detailed arguments or John’s symbolic language, James is direct and practical. His central message is simple: faith without action is dead.

Like cliff diving, you can’t just say you trust God. You have to act on it. That means setting aside doubt and committing fully, even when life is difficult. Persevere, trusting that God will use your struggles to shape you, and don’t hesitate to ask Him for help (James 1:2-5).

The key is not to hesitate. Just as you can’t halfway jump off a cliff, you can’t halfway follow Jesus (James 1:6-8). Take the leap. Leave your fears behind and entrust everything to Jesus.
