The West Coast Churches
Throughout history, generations have thought Revelation was happening in their time. Plagues, invasions, revolutions, and wars have all seemed like the end times to those experiencing them, and evil people like the Roman Emperors, Hitler, and Stalin have been antichrist candidates. Today, events reminiscent of those described in Revelation regularly appear in the news.
So, did Revelation already happen? Is it happening now? Or, is it still coming? The answer is YES to all three questions. Revelation is an ongoing cycle of similar events that repeat throughout history while drawing nearer to the real End Times.
In that case, what do we make of this strange book? With its symbolism, cultural and historical references, imagery, and vague timeline, the Book of Revelation can seem impenetrable. However, it contains immediately practical advice from Jesus Himself.
The book includes letters to seven churches. The first three, addressed to churches on the west coast of modern-day Turkey, contain helpful lessons for walking in faith during troubling times. The first reminds us that while action and hard work are great, they become nothing more than chores if we lose our love for God (Revelation 2:1-7). Stay focused on the reason why you’re serving, not just the service itself. Second, being poor, unimpressive, and suffering while pursuing God is a sign that you’re living how Jesus wants you to—so don’t be discouraged (Revelation 2:8-11). And finally, don’t compromise your beliefs just to fit into your surrounding culture (Revelation 2:12-17).
One of Revelation’s main themes is that evil is everywhere. Don’t bend to it. Maintain your love for God, embrace suffering in His name, and remain steadfast in the truth rather than letting our sinful culture sweep you over a proverbial cliff.
