TANAH: Taught to Remember

Leadership is a prominent topic as Community of Hope navigates a season of transition. But leadership isn’t just about who stands at the pulpit. God frequently gives all of us opportunities to guide, serve, and take responsibility. As we begin exploring the story of Joshua, we can learn how God develops the character we need to lead faithfully.

It begins with reading His Word. The Israelites called the Old Testament the TANAKH. It’s an acronym for its three sections: the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings. The acronym also deliberately echoes the word “tanah,” meaning “to study,” conveying the importance of studying Scripture and letting it shape our lives.

We can also know God’s heart by running from sin. We may consider some sins insignificant, but God takes all sin seriously, so we can’t treat them as unimportant. Growing in godly character means taking holiness seriously (Exodus 32).

As leaders, we will sometimes have to stand alone against opposition. This is an opportunity to trust in God’s strength. When Joshua and Caleb spied out Canaan, filled with frightening giants, they trusted God’s promise, even when the majority opposed them. Christlike character means doing what is right when it’s unpopular and trusting God when obedience is difficult. (Numbers 13)

Christlike character doesn’t develop passively or through study alone. We grow by getting involved, stepping forward, and faithfully doing what God calls us to do. That could involve one person stepping into another’s role and bringing new gifts to bless the community. No one is indispensable, yet we all play a unique part in God’s plan (Deuteronomy 34:9; Joshua 1:1-9).

As you face transitions and uncertainties in your life, consider where God is developing your character. Is He asking you to know His Word better, turn away from sin, stand more firmly for what is right, or take greater responsibility in serving others? Wherever God is leading you, trust His process. Keep growing in character and faithfully step into whatever responsibility He places before you.
