Hit the Spiritual Gym
This sermon was given by Pastor David Booker.
When reading the Bible, the faithfulness of figures like Abraham, David, and Moses is deeply inspiring. But when we read the New Testament letters addressed to ministry leaders, it’s easy to think that kind of character is reserved only for them.
However, when Paul tells Timothy to train himself in godliness, he reveals an encouraging truth: godliness isn’t restricted to the ultra-faithful (1 Timothy 4:7-10). It’s something anyone can train for, just like going to the gym to build muscle. If you put in the time and effort and stay focused on the truth of the Gospel, God will shape your character to become more like Him.
Every believer should hit the spiritual gym, so we’re prepared to teach others to develop the same Christlike character (1 Timothy 4:13). Pastors teach us how to do it every Sunday, and we’re called to do the same with the people we meet day to day. You don’t have to be gifted in teaching or evangelism. God wants all of us to try, because He can use our small efforts in big ways.
Finally, we should model godliness through our actions. Knowing how we should behave means little unless we put it into practice (1 Timothy 4:12). If we’re committed to becoming more like Jesus, we must show it through our behaviour, not just our words. Only when we do both does it become clear to others that Jesus’s teachings really do transform lives. George Müller is a good example. He began life as a deeply sinful man but changed his character and became known for evangelising and helping orphans.
Don’t be discouraged by your sinfulness or perceived lack of spiritual talent. Start training today, and let God shape you to become more like Him.
