Hear It—How Do You Do It?

The idea that actions speak louder than words appears in many cultures throughout history. It frustrates us when people say they’re going to do something and then never follow through, especially when their actions could have made a real difference.

The Bible raises the same theme. Are you the kind of person who takes action, or someone who only talks about it? This question isn’t about obeying rules simply because God said so; it’s about whether faithful action has become part of your character.

Faith is like looking in a mirror (James 1:22-25). The mirror is God’s Word, showing us not only who we are but also who we could become. But looking alone accomplishes nothing unless we respond to what we see. We must act on what God shows us because those actions shape us into people who naturally do His will.

What does it look like to be both a hearer of God’s Word and a doer of His will? At its core, it means serving people in need, even when it requires personal sacrifice (James 1:26-27). But God also speaks to each of us individually if we are willing to slow down, listen, and understand. When we listen first, rather than reacting quickly in anger or frustration, we can hear more clearly what He is calling us to do and avoid making things worse (James 1:19).

Faith isn’t about following rules. It’s a gift that frees us from the sinful patterns that hold us back and shapes us into the people God created us to be (James 1:25). Our part is simple: listen to God, then act on what He says before the world pulls our attention away.
