God Alone
This sermon was given by Pastor Ashu Biswal.
A husband thought his wife was deaf because she never seemed to hear him. To test the extent of her hearing loss, he asked what was for dinner from fifteen, ten, and five feet away. She never responded. When he tried again, she interrupted him: “Honey, this is the fourth time you’ve asked! I told you—we’re having chicken.”
Who was really the deaf one?
We all tend to judge others, assume we know best, and take control, often without realising it. But one thing remains true: whenever we do these things, we try to play God, and we do a poor job of it.
God alone has the right to judge and condemn others (James 4:11-12). While He does call us to lovingly speak the truth, we must be careful not to let sin twist that calling. It is all too easy to criticise others from a place of self-righteousness or to wound them through gossip and slander. Doing so breaks Jesus’s two greatest commandments (Mark 12:30-31) by damaging relationships, creating division, and claiming authority that belongs to God alone.
God also controls the future. Making plans isn’t sinful, but it becomes prideful when we leave God out of them and assume we’re in control (James 4:13-17). Few things are more dangerous than pride. It turns us into self-appointed judges who think we can control truth, morality, and even time itself. Only God has that power.
To overcome pride, we must humbly surrender to God, trusting that He alone directs our lives. We can’t fully experience Christ if we are consumed with ourselves. Surrender isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most liberating things we can do. God is good, and He will lead us to places far better than we could ever reach on our own.
Don’t play God. Let God be God, and trust Him to lead the way.
