Out Of This World

Imagine if we were to travel back in time to an earlier society and show them how much we could help them with our cell phones, airplanes, antibiotics and vaccines, and high-tech home appliances. They could receive our help with awe and thanks. Or they could be scared and skeptical.

It was like this with Jesus. He came from Out of This World to show God in all of His power, love, and authority. If God showed up on earth, what would it take for us to receive Him? Clearly fulfilled prophecy? Teaching and behavior that makes sense deep within, overturning the religious norms of the day? Miracles? Jesus did all of this and caused a huge stir. For a variety of reasons, many thought he was crazy or criminal. But those with open hearts recognized and received Jesus as the Son of God, the Messiah, and Lord. There is no mild response to the things Jesus did and taught.

In John 11, we learn how he resurrected his friend Lazarus, after he had been dead and buried for four days. This miracle didn’t just display His power, but also showed that death meant nothing to Him. It is not final, and is totally within His power to overcome. More importantly, He came to remove the barrier to life created by our sin which causes death.

Raising Lazarus from the dead wasn’t enough to convince eyewitnesses, who had other reasons not to receive Jesus. Sadly, many in our world have those same reasons, and miracles wouldn’t convince them either. How can we get past this?
